Karthik (Naga Chaitanya) is just 22 years old and finished Engineering and aims to become film director. He falls in love with 24-year-old Jessy (Samantha), daughter of his house owner. Jessy is Malayali Christian and works with a software company. First she refuses Karthik’s proposal of love as he is younger than her and she’s Christian and he’s Hindu. But when he comes down to Aleppy when she moves there on a Holiday to impress her and she falls for his charms. Next comes how they go through family problems, their emotional conflicts, etc.

Analysis

After a long time, here comes a very refreshing and beautifully told romantic story. Ye Maaya Chesave is engaging and touching. Tamil director Gautham Menon weaves magic on the screen with some heart touching scenes, poignant moments, beautiful frames, and realistic performances. Rarely we do see a love story told in realistic way with casual dialogues on Telugu screen. Gautham Menon’s film scores there in big way. Story per se is not new but the director’s touch of class in presenting it, narrating it in matured manner grabs us. Anyone who craves for sensitivity in movies would love this one! And those who have fallen in love or tasted romance in their live even more like it! Gautham’s eye for visual beauty, extracting honest performances from the young lead cast, sense for simplicity and realistic approach strikes the chord with us. What this reviewer really liked most is the way the director ha captured the longings of young couple, their confusions and emotional chasm. In most of our Telugu film love stories (or for that matter Tamil movies also), young couple’s desires are shown in cheap manner, here he presents them so delightfully and naturally.

Naga Chaitanya wooing the girl, convincing her and kissing in Train, Samantha expressing her anger before leaving the hero, New York episode show what a fine director Gautham is.

Add to that chemistry between Naga Chaitanya and Samantha is awesome. Especially the girl’s beauty is bewitching. Stunning visuals and Rehmana’s some soulful numbers further elevate the mood of the movie.

On the downside, it is slow paced and before the interval it slackens. Also the heavy usage of English dialogues might not go well with a section of audiences. Entire episode of New York and Climax sequences really stand out. It is completely the director’ film.

Performances

Like his father and grand father, Naga Chaitanya is at home in romantic scenes. This film proves that he should have made debut in love story rather than action story like he did. Naga Chaitanya’s asset is his voice and his casual acting style. Chaitanya has improved much better in performance from his first film but he needs to look after his face. He still looks very ‘boyish’. He can now confidently act in more romantic films and strengthen his position.

Samantha is real scene-stealer. Her beauty is alluring. She can go places in Tollywood if she makes right moves and selects right films. She is good at subtle moments and expressing it with eyes. She is the girl to watch out for. Singer Chinmayi’s voice is perfect and we should thank Gautham for taking Chinmayi instead of regular and boring voices of Savitha Reddy, etc.

Chemistry between both the lead actors rocks. Among other cast, Devan makes impact. Producer Sanjay Swarup as father to Naga Chiatanya is okay. Krisnudu is okay but his voice dominates than his actions. That is his drawback. Puri Jagannadh, Trisha and Shimbu appear in guest roles.

Visually the film is eye-feast. Manoj Paramhamsa’s camera captures the backwaters of Kerala, Hyderabad and New York so beautifully. Every frame looks rich. Art direction, editing by Antony is neat. Rehman’s songs are not that good on hearing but they are in sync with the mood of the movie. ‘Kundanapu Bomma..’, “Ee Hridayam.. “ are good.

Dialogues by Umargee Anuradha are okay but the heavy usage of English should have been avoided (probably it is choice of Gautham). Nalini Sriram’s costumes are uber cool. Sarees designed for the heroine so pretty. As a director, Gautham Menon emerges winner. It is completely his film, part of the episodes look like his autobiography (assistant director, Kerala episodes). He has always been good at handling romantic scenes but looks like he has really poured in his heart in this movie. Undoubtedly, he deserves all the praise for everything in this flick.

Bottom-line!

Gautham Menon weaves magic with some beautiful romantic moments on screen with Ye Maaya Chesave. Great chemistry between the young star couple, great visuals, nice songs, and heart touching scenes really grab you. It is simple but sensitively, realistically made with lot of conviction. The movie haunts you and stays in you even after leaving the movie hall. Go for it and enjoy.

This is the story of twins who get separated at birth. Narasimha (NTR) gets raised by a single mother and he becomes an undercover agent to a top cop. Chari (NTR) is brought up by a family of traditional Hindu priests. A gang of baddies (Asish Vidyardhi and Mahesh Manjrekar) are in search of the family of a top scientist. The rest of the story is about the relationship between the scientist and the twins and the comedy generated by switching between the characters.

Artists Performance

adurs NTR: NTR donned two roles. He is extremely entertaining as Chari with Brahmin diction. He generated lots of comedy when he says ‘naakesaru’ repeatedly in the movie. His character as Narasimha is more like extension of his Kantri character (both looks and mannerisms). His dances are amazing and give you a mass kick in the title song that comes before climax.

adursOthers: Brahmanandam hogs the limelight again in this movie as a Hindu priest who ‘maintains’ the family of Nayana Tara. Brahmanandam has lots of footage and he in combination of NTR makes sure that there is enough entertainment. Nayana Tara is paired up with Chari character and she is pretty good. Sheela is glamorous and she is paired with Narasimha character. Mahesh Manjrekar is wasted due to poor characterization. Nassar, Sayaji Shinde and Asish Vidyardhi are alright.

Technical departments

adursStory – screenplay – direction: Story given by Kona Venkat is contrived. It is an old-fashioned formulaic story of twins which had been presented to us umpteen number of times (Don, Rowdy Alludu, Mugguru Monagallu, Hello Brother etc). The scientist father angle is inspired by Krishh. The undercover agent had The Departed/Pokiri shades. Screenplay by VV Vinayak should have been better. VV Vinayak who brings emotion into his action films couldn’t do justice to mass character in Adurs. The action sequences and emotion involved in it is not properly established. However, VV Vinayak seems to have acquired a knack for getting his comedy timing well since his last film Krishna. The characterization he has done for Chari character deserves applause. I liked the ‘atma’ (mummy) twist given to Brahmanandam character in the second half. The second half and climax needs a lot of improvement.

adursOther departments: The numbers scored by Devi Sri Prasad are just okay. My personal favourites are ‘where is the panchekattu’ followed by title song. Cinematography by Chota K Naidu is alright. Dialogues by Kona Venkat are good in parts. Editing and other post-production activities should have been better. The graphics work done in this movie is sub-standard compared to big hero projects. Producer Vamsi has spent good amount of money in the movie, but it is not converted into the final product. There is no slickness in visuals and sound.

adursAnalysis: First half of the movie is okay with some nice entertainment by NTR (Chari character) and Bramanandam. The second half of the movie where the real crux lies is not constructed well. The three serious villains (Sayaji Shinde, Asish Vidyardhi & Mahesh Manjrekar) of the movie conspire in the second half only to transform themseleves into comedy villains. The climax should have been better. Plus point of the movie is comedy by Chari character. The story and screenplay are the weaklings. VV Vinayak should have concentrated more on Narasimha character to get the balance in terms of emotion and action orientation. We have to wait and see how the masses receive it.

Tarakaratna and Bhoomika are childhood friends. The former is a maid’s child, the latter, the daughter of a feudal lord has a strange fetish for number 10. The father doesn’t like Bhoomika to mingle with Tarakaratna who adores her..so tortures him, slits his throat and throws him into the river. That’s the flashback. Years later, Bhoomika is married and pregnant. Tarakaratna returns, unable to digest the 10 kisses that Bhoomika’s husband plants on her cheek, breaks his head and Bhoomika turns mad.

There is a sub-plot, Ravibabu is a cop and his wife Sneha is pregnant. Ravibabu takes over the charge of investigating a strange crime in the city. Nine bleeding women are rushed in 108 to a hospital one after the other, the problem is the baby has been snatched from the womb. Tarakaratna is nabbed and a series of investigations reveal that the tenth woman to be targeted is Sneha. Ravibabu doesn’t save his wife, he safely hands her over to the criminal. Sounds strange?

Tarakaratna hypnotises people into doing what he wants from the jail. The climax shows that Bhoomika who has now gone insane after losing her husband and child wants not one but 10 babies.

Remember she likes 10. So far so good. But after this the movie takes a comic turn. Bhoomika can’t conceive again, so Tarakaratna has an option, surrogate motherhood. What you see next is the doc doing intra uterine insemination in all the ten women, then the 9 babies are found lying in the cradle, the tenth one is still in Sneha’s womb. Just when the midwife is beginning to cut open Sneha’s tummy with surgical precision, Ravibabu shoots the bad woman. All’s well that ends well but not before Gadde Sindhura, the cop makes a technical revelation.

Some advantages of seeing the film, you know the longest word in English is Supercalifrageristicexpalidocious. Tarakaratna gets a redemption and how! Ravibabu proves that the Telugu film industry is no less than Hollywood and it takes only three seconds to hypnotise people by saying Fillipine, Sillipong, Sillipox, Al Khalifa, Lillipond, Dilbert Roger..phew! and keep them in control as long as you want.

It is not within your reach to make this movie work unless you have a control over your mind, unless you hypnotise yourself into believing that this film is a cinematic wonder. There are options as well, read books on advanced hypnosis, fetch yourself an appointment with a doc in Yasodha Hospitals, preferably a neuro surgeon or develop a soft corner for patients with mental disorder or just simply oppose Tammareddy Bharadwaj’s statements that Telugu film industry lacks a man enough to make good or novel cinema.

The movie may appeal to a few people who find this plot reasonably sophisticated, why Tarakaratna behaves the way he does is kept as a suspense for a long time, the curiosity factor about number ten is sustained but the story gets repulsive right from the beginning, the torture, the gruesome plot of pulling out babies and finally relating it to hypnotism. Tarakaratna does his best to look like a lunatic with the mask and his actions. Sneha and Bhoomika, Ravibabu all do their part well.
