Overture Films lost a bundle with Righteous Kill but the reunion of Ethan Hawke and his Training Day director Antoine Fuqua is pretty much a can’t-miss shot at success, right? The trailer offers equal doses of machismo, stress, and style, though I paid the most attention when Don Cheadle shared the screen with Wesley Snipes, since their wedge of the story reads as though it has the most layers — even though we’ve watched an infinite number of cops get way-too-undercover over the years. Also: Couldn’t Mr. Fuqua direct a film like this in his sleep at this point in his career?

On his second go-round behind bars, scam artist Steven Russell (Carrey) commits the ultimate con in order to break out and win back the heart of Phillip Morris (McGregor), with whom he fell in love during his first prison sentence.

The major studios didn’t touch this movie, even though it played well with Sundance audiences of all stripes. It’s as though the apparent difficulty in marketing a gay-themed film trumps the presence of A-List stars and worshipped Bad Santa screenwriters Glenn Ficarra and John Requa joining up to adapt and direct this true story. Consolidated Pictures Group, who did a wonderful job with Bottle Shock, snapped up the movie months after the festival, and I hope they’ve used the better part of the year since the acquisition to put an ace marketing plan in place? In other words: please, please, please don’t let this be a slip through the specialty-film market cracks.

Disfigured serial killer Freddy Krueger (Haley) stalks a group of young people in their dreams, forcing them to remain awake as the only alternative to death.

This might be the most appealing horror remake to date, merely due to the casting of Jackie Earle Haley as the sweatered one. And in the world of music video directors turned auteurs, here’s hoping Samuel Bayer (“Smells Like Teen Spirit”) is more Michel Gondry/Spike Jonze than McG/Joseph Khan. Have to admit I dug the teaser trailer, and I’m into the other cast members, especially Kyle Gallner (the most successful ex-”Veronica Mars” star?), Rooney Mara (potential new scream queen action), and Thomas Dekker (who should be seen this year in All About Evil, the first midnight movie directed by a drag queen).
